So you think your mom is starting to lose it… of course YOU are probably the cause!
When Ivy was only a few weeks old, as every baby does she woke up repeatedly through the night. Each time Megan and I would wake up startled by her yells through the baby monitor (no matter how often you get woken up at 2:00 in the morning it is always startling). Then Megan would go and feed Ivy. By the end of the first month, Megan was beginning to show the signs of her lack of sleep, which climaxed when one night she awoke with Ivy crying and began searching the bed. Finally she grabbed my arm and shouted, “where is the baby”! Still in a stupor and revealing myself to be a loving husband, I responded, “are you crazy, she is in her bed.” Amazingly this did not end well for me…
Megan was suffering from what has been termed “momnesia”. Its effects are most evident in the few months after giving birth, but can continue throughout childhood. Of course the effects are not all negative as the moms forget some details, they often have uncanny abilities to know their child is in danger. So the next time you mom shouts, “you children are driving me crazy!” realize that it is probably the truth. And in those moments, cut your mom some slack and BEHAVE.
