So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” Simon Peter answered him, “To whom shall we go?” (John 6:67-68)
John 6 is the moment when the crowd, even the disciples, realized they did not know who they were following . The expectation was Jesus as King, the ruler who would throw off the bonds of Roman oppression. The one who would provide material blessing (as he had with the loaves and fish). And yet when the crowd moved to take up swords, willing to die for Jesus, the chosen one went into a litany on cannibalism… “Eat my flesh… drink my blood” (6:53)
Where was Jesus going? And “because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him.” (John 6:66, a clever verse number)
Are you prepared to follow Jesus? Are you willing even when you do not know where you are going—even if he takes you where you do not want to go?
Is simply knowing Him enough?
