Church in our Bathrobes

“You can’t cancel church” – Phoebe, still in her nightgown, this morning.

Phoebe in RobeWell, actually… We cancelled services this morning. With the snow on the roads and temperatures starting to drop (10 degrees right now, wind chills at -15) the deacons and I decided to cancel Sunday services.

A few weeks ago we cancelled Sunday School, but kept worship service. There was a very small crowd and I joked that these were the ones who really loved Jesus…

It was a joke, but there was a part of me that thought the statement was true. God wants us in church, He wants us committed to Sunday services. But as the words left my mouth, I knew they were not true.

God wants us to be committed to church. But fellowship with other believers does not have to happen on Sunday or in a certain building. Check out Acts 2:42-47, the early church meet in homes and God added to their number daily. Not just on the sabbath! (Chandler does not even have a way for folks to join on days other than Sunday…)

So Phoebe is right. I can’t cancel church. We may not be in Chandler’s building this morning, but take time to plan your own worship service. Read scripture. Sing your favorite song. If you are with your family, then each person offer a thought or prayer! Have worship this morning at home… in your bathrobe.

Tell me about your services this morning (or some other morning – if you are a part of another church).
