Hills, Billboards, and Living

Friends, the Chiefs are in the Super Bowl. Wear your RED on Sunday!

But that is not the only event happening in my life. I am about to hit a milestone and become a stone tumbling down the hill. On Monday I am Forty. And a new decade makes me pause… what hill has my life climbed?

This week in the KC Star was an article about a Pizza Shop’s billboard, “Fat people are harder to kidnap!” The initial reaction was silly, I am overweight and I am hard to carry. High five! But soon enough – you know today’s culture – people were accusing the pizza restaurant of not taking human trafficking seriously. And the billboard came down.

Our society is easily offended. And the simplest course is to stay silent. To go about our own lives and not bother with those who disagree. To surround ourselves with like minded friends. But as followers of Christ we are not called to live silently, we are called to LIVE the radical life of Jesus. Which means we eat pizza in a celebrating, come-as-you-are, community! We also make every effort to end human trafficking. We stress less about billboard jokes and social media rants, and instead we make sure our neighbor has enough food. Both physical and spiritual food — that they may taste and know God’s good love.

This Sunday we start a new theme entitled LIVe. The logo may have sprung up from the super Roman numeral 54, but the core is built out of Philippians 3. What does it mean to live for Christ? What does this life look like? To put it another way, when faced with Third and 14 how do we live?

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14)
