I mentioned this passage briefly last week, but could not escape the image…
I have seen movies where men will fall on their own sword rather than be taken captive. Supposedly it is historical, but all I know is that Hollywood tells me it is true (which I wonder how many of my “facts” are really just from Holly-truths). But this is great representation of Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double edged sword.” We love to read this verse and think of ourselves as the sword wielder and in part this is true. But the sword should also pierce our own hearts… As you read and teach the scripture, be pierced. Then pierce the students. Scripture should hurt as often as it comforts (really in the beginning it will hurt more, until we bear the scars of Christ!)
